I am keen to work with individuals interested in personal development, and dealing head-on with obstacles to that development. There is likely some awareness of what those obstacles might be, because the individual is encountering difficulties in relationships to self and/or others, in role functioning, or in comfort and enjoyment with life. Insight and self-understanding are sought, and there is an interest in clarifying how past history might be implicated in current issues. There may also be a degree of frustration in terms of recognizing emotions or appreciating opposing poles of specific conflicts. Motivation to work is key. , My aim in working with individuals is to encourage self-understanding; my aim is to get to know the person in a comprehensive manner and to encourage a similar process in that person. This may often involve identifying aspects of functioning, connections to the past, or motivations that are out of awareness. , I have recently moved out of a 32-year career in a hospital-based academic department of psychiatry. My work involved clinical practice in the outpatient service (individual and group therapy) and an active program of psychotherapy research.
