A wise doctor once wrote: "It is more important to understand the person who has a symptom than the symptom a person has." This is even more true for emotional problems than physical ones. Likewise, without understanding the context of a person\s life and family, past and present -- one cannot really begin to know the person. I have worked for many years with men and women of all ages: with addictions, family and relationship issues, and the universal challenges of depression and anxiety. Certainly there are commonalities among the problems they present, but it is the uniqueness of each of my clients that leads to change. , I listen; I ask questions; I try to understand my clients from the inside out. I try to connect person-to-person. Depending on the particular situation, I may want to see the family, partner/spouse, parents as well. A presenting symptom is just that: a presentation. Of what? Why this particular conflict? Why now? These are some of the questions I ask. , I prefer to see my clients in person, as one learns more and connects better face-to-face. But I also see people online, when in-person sessions are inconvenient.
